China’s Warning to the US after Warship stand-off in disputed waters

Beijing is doubling down on its assertion of total control over the South China Sea, swarming warships and aircraft around a US destroyer as it sailed through international waters at the weekend. “We urge the US side to immediately stop such kind of provocative actions, strictly manage and control its maritime and air military operations so as not to cause any eventuality,” a Chinese military spokesman warned. The guided-missile destroyer John S. McCain crossed through the South China Sea, passing near the disputed Paracel Islands, on Friday. It’s the third such mission since June. The warship’s presence is part of Washington’s ongoing “Freedom of Navigation” campaign to assert what it calls common practice. Global internet marketing thought leader and founder of AiiMS, Kynan Albassit, warns business owners to urgently take action to improve their websites and online marketing to avoid being impacted by Google’s latest changes

According to Kynan Albassit, when Google changes the way it does things, this usually impacts the world in a big way.

“Not too many people realise, but while we have all been dealing with COVID, Google has implemented one of the biggest changes to its search engine algorithm methodology in years – and the changes are going to affect a lot of people,” Albassit said.

Kynan Albassit is the founder and head of Australia’s leading digital marketing agency, the Australian Institute Of Internet Marketing Services, also known as the AiiMS Group.   He is also an industry thought leader and an expert on all matters Google.

“Think about it – over 90 percent of people in Australia and across other parts of the world use Google to undertake everyday search activities and to navigate and support their use of the internet,” Albassit said. 

“From consumers to businesses, Google is the biggest ‘must use’ tool in the world.  If a business wants to reach new customers, it optimises its website to rank well ‘organically’ on Google.  In fact, many businesses rely 100 percent on the arrival of traffic to their website from Google.  If businesses spend money on advertising, many only advertise on Google; they don’t advertise anywhere else.”

“So imagine what would happen to all these businesses and their revenue, if changes are made by Google that penalise business owners for poor performing websites.   The impact would be disastrous.”

“Well that is exactly what Google has done.   It has introduced a new set of parameters to determine how well a website ranks based on page experience factors.”

Albassit states that page experience factors are a set of considerations called ‘core web vitals’ that determine how ‘website friendly’ a site actually is.

“In summary, Google is now judging websites on three new metrics including their speed to load and speed to respond to customer engagement,” Albassit added.

“While Google already uses some elements of user experience to assist in ranking websites such as safe browsing, mobile friendliness and security, these three new metrics will address the user experience in a more defined way.”

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)

“This addresses the loading experience.   LCP measures the time it takes for the most important and relevant content on a website to load,” Albassit said.

“LCP is measured in seconds and a load time of 2.5 seconds or less is considered ideal.   If elements of your website are slow to load, this will now impact your site’s Google ranking.

“So, if your website hosting is poor quality, your site contains coding that delays loading, or you have too many big images on your site and this affects loading times, you are going to be punished.”

First Input Delay (FID)

“This measures the length of time it takes for your site to respond to a visitor’s action.  For example, if a site visitor clicks on a link, how quickly does the page respond,” Albassit explained.

“FID is measured in milliseconds and the ideal response time is 100 milliseconds or less. 

“If you have multiple activities on your site such as products, sign up boxes, log in sections – all of these must respond in milliseconds or less in order to meet Google’s new user experience requirements.

“Poorly designed websites, too much javascript and inferior quality website hosting will kill your Google ranking.”

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)

“The third and final new factor relates to visual stability, measured with cumulative layout shift (CLS),” Albassit said.

“This is an interesting element as it monitors how well your website performs when each page loads.  Do images and other elements jump around or shift as a page loads? If they do, this means your CLS will be high.  Google considers a CLS score of below .1 to be ideal.

“While page loading is also affected by internet speed and device grunt, which are all out of the control of the website owner, there are things you can do to streamline things at site level.”

“Poorly designed websites will be affected here again.  If images or any elements on a site have been embedded without specific dimensions, this will impact the way content loads and affect the way it appears on the user’s screen.”

According to Albassit, people who surf the net using Google are the winners.

“The upshot of all of this is – consumers are the winners.  Anyone browsing the internet using Google will get to see the sites at the top of their search page that Google considers are not only safe and full of appropriate content, they also deliver the best customer experience possible,” Albassit added.

“The reality here is that for many businesses that have not invested a lot of time or resources into their websites, and the sites are less than perfect – these sites will be punished big time under Google’s changes.

“In essence, Google is saying – to be on our platform, the best of the best websites will be given premium placement – because Google wants to deliver the best experience possible for its users.”

“What can businesses do before these changes destroy their business?  Start searching for good help.   Your website is going to need some changes, and you may have to change or upgrade your hosting.  Don’t wait for the changes to impact you.  Act fast.  It doesn’t take long to be pushed down Google’s pages – but it can take a while to climb back up depending on how you approach things.”

Global ‘business growth’ thought leader and founder of Accuratus, Roslyn Newbound, shares her insights on how businesses can retain and acquire quality talent during the world skills shortage

Australia’s leading business growth advisor and industry thought leader, Roslyn Newbound, believes the world’s skilled worker shortage is hitting the small business sector harder than other industries.

“With Australia’s borders closures preventing the arrival of technical and skilled workers from overseas into the country, businesses are now having to fight for available resources and things are about to get tougher for small businesses.  This is especially evident in tourism and hospitality where our clients are being hit hard by this shortage and unable to fill shifts in wineries and restaurants,” Newbound said.

“Many skilled workers are now able to name their price as the employment market heats up.   Small businesses, already impacted by lockdowns, are finding it hard to compete against larger firms with bigger budgets.

“For local employees, the flexibility of working from home since the beginning of the pandemic has created a resistance to return to pre-COVID work arrangements.  Traveling to and from work, paying exorbitant parking fees, and quite simply not being able to balance home and work to meet the growing demands of a busy life is not an attractive option when there are now alternatives available.   Businesses, irrespective of size, are losing staff and critical business knowledge at the same time.”

The local employee resistance and overseas employee shortage is forecast by Newbound to be one of the highest business risks, across all industries, in 2022.  Business owners and leaders will be keen to recoup lost revenue from 20/21. They run the risk of losing critical internal business skills and knowledge required to support achievement of goals. For too long, businesses have ignored the necessity of capturing organisational knowledge, intellectual property and learning in a structured management system.   The significant risk of losing key information to a competitor, when an employee leaves or creates their own start-up, is now very real for many businesses.  This risk will only increase until the business defines a strategy for retention of people.

According to Newbound, while there are some things businesses can do to create a team culture that supports staff retention, in the current environment where budget is an issue, businesses will need to look at other strategies and tactics to retain and attract quality staff without getting caught up in a salary bidding war.

“The average wage increase that an employee accepts when taking another job is 15 percent however while salary does play a huge role in employee retention, it’s important to understand that it is not the only factor,” Newbound added.

Newbound has outlined some of the strategies she has assisted many small businesses to implement during COVID to increase staff retention and attract new staff.

  1. Flexible work from home policies

“While COVID has changed the way we work, a lot of people wrongly believe everyone will simply return to the office environment once things have settled down,” Newbound said.

“The reality is that many people actually like working from home and they prefer this environment. If you have the capacity and capability to offer work from home arrangements for staff moving forward beyond COVID, then this is definitely something to implement on a permanent basis. 

“To set the business and employees up for success, take time to define work processes and agree KPIs with employees – with autonomy comes accountability.  By agreeing to work from home on a full-time basis or straddle a combination of working from home and the office arrangements, with the right framework, it can take your business from strength to strength.  Fulfilled employees equates to greater pride and productivity in work delivery.”

  • Consider value add options in lieu of money

“Many people are looking for different ways to grow their wealth and benefit from their long hours of hard work,” Newbound added.

“Salary sacrifice is often considered to be reserved for big businesses only.  In actual fact, any employer can offer salary sacrifice to employees.  The advantage is employee salary sacrifice offers the opportunity to increase superannuation contributions and this is an attractive option for people nearing retirement age, buying a new car, paying school fees, and paying health insurance using pre-tax dollars.

“Better still, the cost impact to the employer is mainly covering the payroll administration fees.  Speak to your accountant and test whether this option might make employment with your business more attractive.”

  • Provide mental health support

“Mental health support is a huge factor in today’s workforce,” Newbound emphasised.

“Actively support your employees.  Increase communication more than you think you need to.  Regularly check in on your team members to find out how they are going with work and life in general.  Surprise them with gifts that support their mental health, ie, flowers, books, vouchers, etc.  Praise and thank them for their work.  Do something as simple as remember birthdays.  It isn’t expensive to give an employee a call to simply say ‘happy birthday’.  A call like this sends a clear message to an employee that they are valued.

“Incorporate official mental health days into your leave structure to support them where ever possible.”

  • Offer memberships

“Reach out and connect with organisations that are able to provide your staff with member benefits at reduced rates.  You may even be able to fund these yourself and provide them to your staff as an organisational benefit,” Newbound explained.

“These may include discounted phone plans, gym memberships, weight loss meal packages, health insurance.  Organisations are always looking for ways to build their client base and will offer significant incentives to businesses for introducing their staff.

“One of the key complaints of employees is that training promised is never delivered unless the employer sees an immediate return on investment.  If there is a line item on the annual budget for training, use it.  Training is not just about courses and qualifications; an employee will place great value on being personally mentored by the CEO for one hour per month.  For small business owners who may not have a large budget available right now, dedicating some time to employee development contributes towards business succession planning, employee development and maintaining your finger on the pulse when the team are working remotely.  

“For formal training, make the effort to find out what options are available and offer them to staff.  Where possible, provide them with study time to undertake their course work.

“Each of these options can be delivered at relatively little cost for an employer.  If there is anything that COVID has done for employers which has offered a silver lining, being able to be creative in identifying solutions which employee engagement and retention is definitely it.”

Why Jalal Abuimweis Ventured Into The Real Estate Industry

With money becoming an important part of sustaining lives everywhere, people tend to look for schemes, careers, and industries that can help them make a decent profit while leaving a positive impact on others.

Through this approach, Jalal gets to help homeowners in need, provide new opportunities for real estate investors in the area, and improve the neighborhood in general. 

Jalal has worked with more than 400 clients to date who have achieved desirable results with his help. In the next five years, his goal for his company is to expand and become the largest real estate investment in South America. 

An Advice For Growth 

Before Jalal reached the position he is now, he had to face challenges that tested his mettle as an entrepreneur. But because of his perseverance, he overcame these struggles and continued to improve until he realized his full potential. 

One thing that helped him achieve his levels of success is by getting rid of the bad ideas that he had when first started in the business. Nothing is easy but giving up on something just because it’s hard won’t bring any results.
