Fang kailun is a rising star of urban planner in China. With two master degrees in the world’s top 100 universities, she promotes the low-carbon concept in her urban planning project to influence the policy makers with her exceptional ability. In her opinion, the low-carbon city planning may have two dimensions, the first one is the change of urban space, the second one is to change the people’s lifestyle.

  • The justification of low-carbon city

People can feel the climate change in recent years especially in developing countries. In this sense, the international city generally believes that carbon dioxide is the main factor causing climate change. The low-carbon development of energy and industry around the world has become the general trend, and carbon emissions have become a global topic of widespread concern. So urban planning in the concept of low-carbon development is important to reduce carbon emission and we have a fundamental belief that the acceleration of climate change is the greatest challenge facing humanityat low carbon.

  • The implementation way of low-carbon city

First, urban space design and constructions need to follow the low carbon urban design principles. Urban design principles support the transformation of existing cities towards more resilience regarding the impact of climate change. Baseson her research in sustainable cities’ transformation, she introduces the green building, the mixed-use and walkable city model as the most promising low-carbon urbanization type, which is suggested to promote to different cities in China. Therefore, multidisciplinary cooperation between experts and stakeholders as well as the integration of technologies into the social and behavioral context will be essential to the success of city transformation.

Second, the behavior change is import to the low-carbon city. The research carried out by Fang kailun found that the daily behavior is the curtail way to reduce the carbon emission. In the low-carbon city planning process, Fang Kailun ask the residents to recycle their household waste, go to work on foot and use public transportation instead of private cars. Moreover, Fang Kailunbelieves that although each of the key behaviorareas has its own specific influences, common themes emerged in the research which highlight the need to appeal to more personal, practical aspirations when attempting to encourage uptake of climate friendly behaviors.

In conclusion,Low-carbon pilot urban planning actions can effectively promote the improvement of urban carbon emission efficiency. She believe that the low-carbon concept can be promoted to different cities all over the world and finally our earth will become a more sustainable places for people.
