Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has voiced his concern regarding the possibility of Donald Trump returning to the White House. Specifically, Zelenskyy labeled Trump’s assertion that he could halt the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia within 24 hours as “very dangerous.” This remark was made during an interview with the U.K.’s Channel 4 News.
An Invitation with a Condition
In a notable gesture, Zelenskyy extended an invitation to the former U.S. president and current front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination. He encouraged Trump to visit Kyiv, but with the stipulation that he fulfills his bold claim of being able to stop the war within a day.
Concerns Over Trump’s Unilateral Approach
The Ukrainian leader expressed apprehension about the United States potentially taking unilateral actions without considering Ukraine’s viewpoint. He noted the lack of clarity in Trump’s proposed “peace plan” and the implications it might have for Ukraine, especially the fear that it could lead to significant concessions to Russia.
Trump’s Political and Diplomatic Stance
Trump has consistently claimed that he is in a unique position to mediate an end to the almost two-year-long conflict, citing his good relationships with both Russian and Ukrainian leaders. His political career has been marked by frequent praise for Russian President Vladimir Putin, even following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. At a campaign rally in Georgia, Trump admired Putin’s strategic acumen and the rapid Russian military advances in Ukraine.
The U.S. House of Representatives impeached Trump during his presidency, alleging that he pressured Zelenskyy into launching a politically motivated investigation to undermine Joe Biden‘s 2020 presidential campaign prospects. This was coupled with withholding $400 million in military aid to Ukraine. However, the Senate acquitted Trump of these charges.
